Welcome to Hemmerling Elementary School

Welcome to the 2015-2016 School Year!

Dear Parents and Students,

We here at Hemmerling are so excited for the upcoming school year!  There are many changes coming our way that we can't wait to share with you.  School will be starting at the same time this year as last year at 9:00 am. Campus will be open at 8:15am.  Please remember that the campus is not open before 8:15 because there is no adult supervision before that time to watch your children.  School ends at 3:10 every day except for Wednesdays, which is a minimum day, and the students are dismissed at 1:45.

The newest change to Hemmerling is our transition to become an AVID campus.  AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. We will be focusing on teaching what we consider the "unspoken curriculum" of school.  There are four components of the AVID campus. This year we will be introducing and concentrating on only two of the four components:

  • Organization: Student Success, AVID Binders, individual responsibility, calendar/agenda

  • Note Taking: Two column and Three column notes

We firmly believe that the above strategies will help our students become even better students.  The notes that the students take in class will be included in their binders.  They will be responsible for bringing the binder home every day and returning it the next day with the agenda/calendar signed by their parent or guardian daily.  If they do not return their binder signed they will be given a consequence!  Our goal is to teach our students to be successful, with a huge part of that being responsibility.  We will have a very firm "no rescue" rule, which will be included in our handbook and gone over at Back to School Night.  The school will be purchasing enough materials for all of the students to have their own binder, but we know how exciting back to school shopping is, so I have included a list of what they will need if you would like to purchase the materials independently.

Back to School Night this year is planned for August 6th.  We will be serving pizza for donation at 5:30 and our program will begin at 6:00.  The first day of school is August 10th.  Remember, attendance is very important the first few days of school.  If you are not in attendance you may lose your spot.  Also, please fill out the enclosed emergency card and turn it in ASAP.

If you have any questions or concerns please call the office at (951) 922-0254.  We can't wait to see you and get the year started!
