Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year at Hemmerling Elementary School! We are excited to start a wonderful school year with you and your student and look forward to our partnership in your student’s education through rigorous, engaging and quality educational experiences.

As the mother of three children (two grown daughters and one college-aged son), I understand the importance of the home/school connection. I strongly encourage you to be involved in our school community! Our volunteer program is a great way to get involved. The Sunshine Committee, School Site Counsel, Coffee with the Principal, and volunteering in classrooms and on field trips are just a few ways to get involved. I also encourage you to inquire with your student about their learning experiences and homework. Keep in touch with your student’s teacher by signing up for Banning Unified School District's new parent communication system through the ParentSquare app (available for download in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store). These are wonderful ways to stay connected to your student’s educational experiences!

This year we will continue to focus on educational excellence by way of AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) and an emphasis on WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading), clear behavioral expectations through PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports), and focus on rigorous reading, writing, math and science instruction infused with technology. Our emphasis is to prepare our students with the 21st century skills to be college and career ready.

As an educator for the last 26 years, I have a passion for educating students and supporting families. I can’t wait to see our students learn, excel and prosper as they grow physically, emotionally and academically throughout the year. I am honored to be your Principal this year and I am invested in making Hemmerling Elementary School a happy, safe place for student learning!

Yours truly,

Mrs. Twila Kelly-Van Ramshorst
